On 12th June 2020, Openreach announced that Salisbury has become the first full city to gain access to Openreach’s FTTP technology. It was stated that this was the fastest city-wide network build in the UK, with engineers having completed the connection in just under 12 months. This has provided Full Fibre broadband to more than 20,000 premises with minimal disruption.
Fibre to the Premises or ‘FTTP’ delivers a complete fibre broadband connection directly to a site for increased speeds and reliable connection. FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) delivers a fibre connection to the green cabinets located on the street, with a copper network then connecting the cabinet to the premise. FTTP removes the need for a copper-based network, providing future-proof connectivity.
The record-breaking build is hoped to encourage more homes and businesses to upgrade to Full Fibre broadband and future-proof connectivity following the COVID-19 outbreak. Openreach states that FTTP drives economic recovery, with a potential £4.3bn economic boost to the South West economy if fully fibred. Businesses in Salisbury are able to successfully compete in markets all over the UK, and around the world. Openreach CEO, Clive Selley commented that this new digital platform can help the UK’s economy bounce back from the global pandemic.
“There has never been a better time to upgrade to a Full Fibre broadband service. This new digital platform can help the UK’s economy bounce back more quickly from the COVID-19 pandemic and that can start right here in Salisbury.”
Clive Selley, Chief Executive of Openreach
From December 2020, Salisbury residents and businesses can order Full Fibre without the need to purchase a traditional copper landline. This supports plans to close the copper-based network across the rest of the UK by 2025 as previously announced by BT. MP for Salisbury and South Wiltshire, John Glen declared his support for the project also, stating that people and businesses should now capitalise on the investment following COVID-19.
“I’ve welcomed Openreach’s commitment to Salisbury and the hard work of their engineers which means we are now one of the best-connected places in the country.”
John Glen, MP for Salisbury and South Wiltshire
Many families across the UK have been struggling with their broadband throughout the Coronavirus pandemic. FTTP can dramatically increase internet speeds for streaming, downloading and working from home which has been vital in the current economic climate.
Fibre optic high-speed connectivity is currently available to approximately 10% of the UK, covering 2.5 million properties. Telecoms World can review your current location for connectivity and provide alternative connection options if an existing fibre path to your premise does not exist.
