SoGEA broadband is something you may start to hear more about over the next few years, as this plays a major factor in the future of British telecoms. But what is SoGEA? In this blog post, we answer the questions around how this superfast broadband connection affects your business and why it’s important to learn more about the looming PSTN/ISDN switch off come 2025.
SoGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access and enables providers to order broadband without the need for a telephone line. A SoGEA broadband connection enables customers to combine their voice and data services all using a single, superfast internet connection, removing the need for the traditional copper-based telephone line entirely. A SoGEA broadband connection has the potential to reach speeds of up to 330mbps and will be used for both internet and telephone services.
With traditional telephony now outdated, BT announced that from 2025, the UK will switch to entirely data-based technology. This essentially means that following the termination of the PSTN/ISDN, there will be Fibre and Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SoGEA) connection options for Broadband Only, with telephone services provided over Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
The PSTN/ISDN switch off affects everyone, and so it’s never been more important to learn more about how your business can be pro-active in finding a replacement solution to the copper-based network before the 2025 deadline.
The great thing about this inevitable change is that there’s no real downside to progressing to data-only connectivity. The copper-based network has now become outdated, and the evolution of broadband over the past 10 years has become fast and stable enough to carry telephone services into the future. Not only that, but cloud-based technology is cheaper and more accessible, allowing users to work efficiently from any location, on any device.
VoIP offers a range of benefits including having the freedom to use various devices to make and receive calls including desk phones, computers, laptops and smartphones from anywhere. This geological independence means that achieving business continuity and having a disaster recovery solution is possible without additional cost.
At Telecoms World, we ensure that your business operates on the right connection at the right price. Our specialists are on hand to research and advise you on the speed and resilience available to your business based on the local telephone exchange and broadband connection to your company premises.
The internet connections available through our network are ‘Business Only’ meaning that residential use at peak times will not interrupt your upload and download speeds. If speeds do drop, our network engineers are on hand to test hardware and run diagnostic checks to get you up and running at full throttle as a business-critical priority.
Many businesses still use the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), connecting their phone systems and handsets using physical copper wire into the onsite and local exchange, where calls are then routed through the PSTN. With a looming deadline for all businesses, now is the time to seriously think about the change to cloud-based telephony.
