BT to shut down their copper network by 2025

In recent years, BT announced that they are going to shut down their ISDN and PSTN (copper) network by 2025 and move their whole network over to IP.

This will affect everyone in the UK using traditional copper phone lines, which is big news. All copper lines in the UK are from the BT network, and all Analogue lines in the UK are connected to BT’s copper network.

What does this mean for your business?

Copper itself isn’t really failing, with many businesses currently using it without problems. But, like all technology, it eventually becomes obsolete. With the introduction of VoIP and SIP Trunking, copper use has rapidly declined. The main factors being, these new technologies offer cheaper costs in call rates, scalability, improved reliability, and new features.

In other words, there are better services available that costs less than copper.

What is VoIP and SIP Trunking, and why are they better than Copper?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that allows you to use your internet to make voice calls, rather than through copper lines that a ‘traditional’ phone system would do.

SIP ‘Session Initiation Protocol’ allows you to send multimedia (voice, instant messaging, video calls etc.) using the internet. SIP enables VoIP to happen; it branches out from VoIP and also has its own phone systems.

Both VoIP and SIP are IP services that run over a fibre network and offer cheaper calls compared to copper, as well as cheaper scalability. They are arguably more reliable and can offer crystal clear calls. With IP you get a host of new features that you wouldn’t get with copper.

We’re already helping a number of UK businesses shift from their legacy copper systems to our Hosted Phone System. We can provide solutions for various phone systems and connectivity options to suit a range of business requirement. With huge savings on IP calls and line rental, we can help to lower your overall telecom costs, whilst increasing call features and functionality.

We manage everything from number porting to hardware setup to help make the switch as streamlined as possible. Imagine the rush to make these changes in a few years’ time, as we approach 2025. Don’t get caught out trying to move your business telecoms in a few years’ time, make the switch sooner rather than later for a smooth transition.

What is ISDN?

ISDN, stands for ‘Integrated Services Digital Network’ and are phone lines that allow the transmission of digital data (voice) over the copper network. They were introduced in 1986 and were commonly used before the introduction of VoIP and SIP Trunking.

What is PSTN?

PSTN (public switched telephone network) refers to the international telephone system that uses copper wires to carry analog voice data. It consists of a collection of individual telephones that are hardwired to a public exchange. It's also referred to as the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS). Today, it is almost entirely digital in technology except for the final link from the central (local) telephone office to the end-user.
