You won’t be able to get a physical phone line installed after 2027 because the UK’s old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) the traditional copper-based landline system is being permanently switched off. This nationwide change, led by BT and Openreach, is happening because the analogue infrastructure is outdated, expensive to maintain, and no longer suited to modern communication needs. After the switch-off, all voice services will run over digital networks using broadband or fibre connections instead, known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or “Digital Voice.” As a result, new copper landlines will no longer be installed, and existing ones will stop working, with all customers required to migrate to digital phone and broadband services.
If you currently have a traditional landline, alarm system, or device that depends on a copper phone line, you’ll need to upgrade to a digital alternative before 2027. After the switch-off, existing analogue lines will stop working, and new physical landlines will no longer be installed. Instead, phone calls will be made over the internet using your broadband connection. Most providers, such as BT and Virgin Media, are helping customers move to “Digital Voice” or VoIP services to ensure a smooth transition.
