On 24th July, Ofcom announced that following a consultation earlier in the year, the UK could soon experience a faster, more reliable wireless connection. This is due to the media regulator easing congestion in wireless networks, allowing for an increased user experience across the country.

Ofcom manage the UK’s airwaves or ‘spectrum’ – an infrastructure which supports devices that require a wireless connection such as televisions, baby monitors, wireless microphones, and satellites. The spectrum has multiple bands for different purposes, however, has limited availability and must be managed accordingly. Ofcom are making the 6 GHz band available for Wi-Fi services without requiring a licence, thus freeing up space in the spectrum for increased connection speeds.

The Coronavirus pandemic has created a large demand for households and businesses across the UK, and the recent Ofcom updates in the spectrum will help those working from home and the increasing demand for reliable Wi-Fi services in the future.
