Windows 10 Support Is Ending, What It Means for You and Your Business
A major change is coming for millions of Windows users around the world.
Microsoft has confirmed that support for Windows 10 will officially end on Tuesday, 14 October 2025 and that means devices still running it could soon be at risk.
Once support ends, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, leaving systems increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware, and compatibility issues.
Why It Matters
Windows remains the world’s most widely used operating system, powering over 1.4 billion devices globally. Yet, as of mid-2025, around 43% of these are still running Windows 10 (Statcounter).
In the UK alone, consumer experts estimate that over 20 million people are still using Windows 10 devices, many of which won’t be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11.
That means millions could soon face tough decisions:
- Upgrade to Windows 11 (if the hardware allows)
- Pay for extended support
- Or risk running an unsupported, unsecured system
Consumer groups, including PIRG, have criticised Microsoft’s decision, saying it could lead to unnecessary spending and environmental waste as functional computers are replaced simply because they can’t run the latest version.
What Are Your Options?
If you’re using Windows 10, you have a few choices:
1. Upgrade to Windows 11
If your PC meets the requirements, you can upgrade for free via the Settings > Privacy and Security menu. This ensures continued support and security protection.
2. Use Extended Security Updates (ESU)
If your PC can’t upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft is offering Extended Security Updates until October 2026.
- Free for users in the European Economic Area (EEA)
- Elsewhere, access costs around $30 (£22) or 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points
- For businesses, ESU pricing starts at $61 per device
ESU includes critical security patches, but no technical support or feature updates.
The Business Impact
For organisations still operating on Windows 10, the end of support could pose serious cybersecurity and compliance risks.
Without regular security patches, companies may:
- Breach data protection or regulatory requirements
- Become targets for ransomware or phishing attacks
- Experience software compatibility issues
This is where proactive IT management becomes essential.
