According to recent figures from network provider Openreach, 2020 delivered more than double the amount of broadband usage across the UK, including a record-breaking Boxing Day. This was driven by an increased use of home working technology, video conferencing, online gaming, and streaming services such as live sport, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Openreach stated that 26th December 2020 was the busiest day ever for the network, with a record-breaking 210 Petabytes consumed across their fibre networks. It was also reported that during 2020, the daily record for broadband use was broken 15 times, with the average property connected to Openreach’s fibre networks using 3,000 Gigabytes of data or around 9GB per day. That’s the equivalent of between two and three HD movies being streamed in every house in the country, every day.
Following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ambitious election pledge of providing all homes and businesses in the UK with fibre broadband speeds by 2025, it came with the promise of £5 billion to complete the project. This was unfortunately then reduced to £1.2 billion following a spending review. To further support the build of a nationwide Full Fibre connection, Openreach has now announced the creation of 5,300 new jobs with the added hope of improving service levels.
To achieve this, BT’s Openreach division is recruiting 2,500 people for engineering jobs, with estimates of it’s construction partners taking on 2,800 more. Applicants will not need engineering skills to apply for the jobs, and amongst the existing Openreach recruits are shop workers, ex-servicemen and women, and a trainee vet.
The £12 billion Full Fibre project aims to connect around 50,000 premises a week this year, with more than 4 million homes and businesses already receiving a faster, reliable, and future-proof broadband service.
